September 16, 1973 - March 15, 2022
Madeline “Smiley” Bethea was born to John Bethea and Margaret Bethea (Berkeley) on September 16, 1973. She peacefully parted this life on March 15, 2022. Madeline was born in Newark, New Jersey. She attended St. Mary’s Elementary School and later completed her high school studies at West Kinney High School. It was during her high school years that she was given her nickname, Smiley. Her smile and laughter were infectious. Madeline’s beautiful dimples were as deep as her compassionate spirit. If Madeline had it, you did too. She did not like to see others suffer. Her sweet spirit and genuine positive energy touched all of those that she came in contact with. Madeline absolutely loved music. In her teenage years, her walkman or 80’s “boom box” remained close to her as she rhythmically moved throughout her days. After high school, Madeline completed a Medical Assisting program at Essex County College. Although she had this credential, she remained employed in the food service industry. For several years, she would offer her warm smile and words of encouragement to guests who would visit Beth Israel Medical Center’s on-site restaurant. Madeline was a champion for people. Regardless of guests’ occupational status - from surgeons to janitors - Madeline made everyone feel special. She warmly shared her beautiful smile and would offer help to anyone who needed it. During the early 2000’s, Madeline reccommited her life to Christ. Her deep yearning to seek God’s face was felt by those around her. Her unwavering faith and strong prayer life helped her to manifest many miracles. One of her favorite songs during this transformational season was “Falling in Love With Jesus”. It was during this time that she experienced a renewed sense of peace and was firmly reconnected and grounded in her relationship with Christ. She joined the Church of God By Faith in Newark, NJ and later moved her membership to Rhema New Life Fellowship in West Orange, NJ under the leadership of Pastor Wayne Brunson Sr. Madeline served her church with a passion and she greatly loved the Lord, her Pastor, and her church family with all her heart. She assisted with the Women’s Ministry, Children's Ministry and served as the Pastor's Aide. Even after relocating to Baltimore, MD, she was fully committed as a faithful Zoom church member. Her smile and generous heart will be missed. Madeline had an encouraging spirit. She found joy in good and bad times. She was most proud of her children and poured herself into them to ensure that they would do well. Whether near or far, as a praying woman, she stood in the gap to intercede on her children’s behalf and prayed for them by name: Christopher, Christina and Caleb. Madeline also enjoyed spending time with her friends filled with laughter, great food and music. She enjoyed bonding and creating memories with her life partner, Scott (Fred) Rouse. Over the years, Madeline and Fred were inseparable and she has now joined him in eternal peace as our angels, together. Madeline was a loving daughter, praying mother, protective big sister and dependable friend. Madeline’s spirit will live with us forever through each and every tear, smile and chuckle. We love her and she will truly be missed. Madeline was preceded in death by her father John Bethea, life partner Scott (Fred) Rouse and survived by her (3) children - Christopher, Christina and Caleb, mother Margaret, father figure Joseph, sister Juail (Raymond) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and devoted friends.
