HELEN YVONNE HARRIS Sunrise Sunset July 28, 1940 February 19, 2021 Helen Yvonne Harris, affectionately known by family and friends as Yvonne, was born to the late Helen Viola Harris on July 28, 1940. She received her education in the Baltimore County school system and attended Mt. Joy AME Church. Yvonne always remembered the instruction of her mother about being guided by the Lord and the importance of education. At the age of 14 Yvonne faced the devastating loss of her mother. After bidding her mother farewell, she went to live with her aunt and uncle, Rosa and William Haymon. Two years later, she went to live with her grandmother Estella Harris after her grandfather Grason Harris’ death. In 1958, Yvonne graduated from Hereford High School and in September of that year established the legacy for the family by attending Towson State Teachers College. It was during her matriculation at Towson that Yvonne gave her life to Christ at Central Presbyterian Church and became a member of the Inter-Varsity Fellowship. We were all so excited and proud in 1962 when she received her Bachelors Degree in English. After graduating, she taught English at Kenwood High School for three years. Those of her cousins who were younger were constantly challenged by her to study hard and make good grades. Yvonne had an insatiable appetite for reading. At family functions you would often find her reading stories to the younger family members. It was that appetite for reading that prompted her to go to Atlanta University and pursue a Masters Degree in Library Science. Yvonne accepted a position with Enoch Pratt in Baltimore. During her 20 year tenure she worked in various positions including becoming the Head Librarian at several branches. In 1972, Yvonne accepted the position of Law Librarian for the prestigious firm of Semmes, Bowen, and Semmes. During this time Yvonne adopted her beloved daughter Quan Jordan Harris Thornton. While being a devoted working mother, Yvonne pursued a Masters Degree in Special Education at Coppin State University. After leaving Semmes, Bowen, and Semmes, Yvonne taught at the Baltimore Christian School and Baltimore City Community College. At age 65 she retired. Yvonne remained steadfast in our faith. She was active in various ministries at the Manna Bible Baptist Church, Fellowship of Jesus Associates, and Faith Christian Fellowship. She shared her special gifts of singing, sewing, crocheting. And of course, reading with all that she met. Yvonne’s memory will be kept by her daughter. Quan Jordan Harris Thornton, grandchildren Yvonne, David, Samuel, Jaimie, Barbara, and Michelle, also her Aunt and Godmother, Eleanor Harris Jones and a host of cousins and friends.
